Puppy Health gaurante?

March 10th, 2010 | by admin |

I use to breed an sell american Staffordshire terriers but stopped because of the BYB making it extreamly difficult for me to sell my puppies to a good owner
yes my dogs go through all the health checks, temperment checks, hip x rays, thyroid test etc,are AKC registered and I have a registered Kennel, they also have excelent bloodlines and have been to agility, conformation and obediance shows and have many tropies as do their ancestors, all my breedings are planned and I only breed a dam twice in her life once at 2yrs old and then again at 5 providing she has past all her health checks with flying colours on both occasions,I also know where everyone of my puppies are and often talk to their owners by phone or email sometimes they even bring the puppy back to visit me
I would like to get back into breeding quality amstaffs and give people a chance to own a real amstaff not one from a BYB or puppy mill
what I would like to know is how long a health gaurante for a puppy should be?
I use to offer a 2yr health gaurante but thinking about extending that
oh and my dogs arnt just registerd with the AKC but also with other dog clubs
excuse the bad spelling, not easy with a 2yr old boy sitting on my lap he wants to help type
I was thinking 3yrs as like one of the posters said staffys are puppies until they are 2
I was going to do a lifetime gaurantee but my husband was oposed to that saying people would not get their dogs vaccinated on time or not worm it on time and then put the blame on us because their dog got worms or parvo
if I put in the contract that the lifetime gaurantee only covers genetic health problems would that work? and that other problems are only covered by a 2yr gaurantee
like I said I only breed my dams twice once at 2yrs and then again at 5yrs
I usually have a litter of puppies every 3yrs and they are planned breedings
all my dogs are inside dogs and are bought up around children
I live in australia and there arnt alot of respectible breeders here with quality dogs most staffys here come from puppy mills or BYB
I offer a health gaurante but have never had any problems with my dogs and should a problem arise I would pay all medical costs
I like I love my GSD’s idea, that is somewhat along the lines I was thinking
I would always take a dog back and offer a full refund and then that dog would become apart of my family but if they wanted to keep the dog as most good owners would then I would pay medical costs and refund half of their money

You cannot ‘guarantee’ anything — even with health checks you can’t but you can have a good enough relationship with the owners of the very few puppies you might responsibly produce to where if they were to succumb to some issue, you would gladly replace them – forever. I find that most breeders who do finite guarantees are back yard greeders — who cares about ‘two year guarantee’ since what will happen in two years? The dog can’t be OFAed until it is already two years old and even so, if it is crippled what do you proposed to do? Have the loving family you placed him with return him for a replacement after two years? Uh, they aren’t terribly loving are they?

A breeder can do all the things you state and still simply be a back yard greeder. Is there a shortage of well breed Am Staffs? I don’t think so… If you are knowledgeable and responsible then you would be well aware of the other knowledgeable and responsible Am Staff breeders and discuss this with them instead of asking about it on some internet board. Basically I never was a ‘registered kennel’ – ya know why? Because that is only given to people who put out a litter a year for five years or the equivelent and it has been decades since there has been any breed I was interested in that NEEDED that many litters produced by one breed so the only real purpose of it was as some advertising gimmick and to encourage the making of more puppies that weren’t needed in this world. Don’t get me wrong – I am not at all anti-responsible breeding but a litter a year for five consecutive years is not responsible to any but maybe a very rare breed and even then, it likely isn’t.

When you breed once every five or ten years or so, you don’t have any issues about ‘guarantees’… why would I want a replacement for a health issue in a puppy where I would likely get a pup from the same lines and breeder???

MMM i read somewhere that 2-5 years is good.

Well for a pupp, staffs are med-large dogs, right? that means they are like basically puppys up to age 2. Some do for life though.

2 is pretty generous if you are doing extensive health tests. The guarantee is icing, people buy for the quality of the dog.

Well the good breeders that I know have a LIFETIME guarantee.

If your pups pass them with flying colors, then why must you only give a 2yr health degree? Most diseases come AFTER 5…

A regular health guarantee and a genetic issue guarantee is totally different and you can put a clause in it that states if all proper preventative vaccines are not given the guarantee becomes null and void. Our GSD came with a 2 year health guarantee for illness and disease, but a lifetime guarantee against genetic defects. They also do not believe that if a family ends up with a dog that had a defect that it should have to be given up, hoping that the family would have come to love the dog and would not want to give it up. We bought him under "breeding and show quality", if at 2 years he has his testing done and find out he has a genetic issue or greater potential for hip issues, they will issue a refund of half the purchase price upon proof of having the dog spayed/neutered to ensure it will not be used for breeding. However if the owner does not want to keep the dog, they will issue a 100% refund and refuse to sell you a dog again.
