When the vet checks your dog for heartworms , does that test check for the other worms also?

Posted by : admin

I took my dog to the vet yesterday and forgot to ask. thanks.

A heartworm test is a blood test that checks for heartworm disease.
Some heartworm tests include a lyme, erhlicia and anaplasmosis which are all tick borne diseases. This heartworm test is called a 4dx and if you live in an endemic area it should be done once a year or as needed.
Fecal tests check for intestinal parasites.
You would need to submit a fecal sample to the vet and they would either preform a fecal float or send it out to a lab for fecal with centerfugation.
A fecal sample sent out to a lab for centerfugation is a more accurate method of testing.
It costs more but includes a giardia snap test.

If a fecal sample was not submitted than intestinal parasites were not checked for.
Check your bill for deworming or phone the vet.

The heartworm test is done by analyzing a sample of blood. The vet can check only heartworm with that, or if they use a test called 4DX, they get results for heartworm, Lyme disease, ehrlichiosis, and anaplasmosis ( the last 3 are diseases from ticks.)

Any tests for intestinal worms–roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, tapeworms, etc are done through a fecal test. If you dropped off a sample of your dog’s stool, then they can have results for you to say if any intestinal parasites were found.
