Is it true that your dog allergies can go away by having a dog for a while.?

March 16th, 2010 | by admin |

My sister says that after you have a dog or cat for a while, like some months, you will start to become immune to them and lose your allergy. She has a cat and claims this happened to her.

Is this true ?
My mom tells me that it’s not true though, and that instead you might get asthma. Whos right ?

my daughter was allergic to our dog but through time (5 years) this gradually disappeared. Then, we got a new pup and her allergy has reappeared. She takes meds to help but hopefully it will disappear again through time as she loves dogs

Let’s see… I’ve been with my husband for 3 yrs. He’s allergic to my chihuahuas. In particular, my male who sheds terribly. He still takes allergy meds every day to help with his symptoms.

You don’t become immune overtime. You either are able to deal with it, or you aren’t.

Hmm, interesting. I have actually never heard this before. I would have to say improbable.

Allergies, however, do not cause asthma. A person with asthma can have the asthma triggered by an allergen, but not *caused* by one.

Some people do get use to the dander on dogs and cats and their allergy symptoms will lessen, but they will still have allergies to them. You can treat them with medication which will help relieve the symptoms but it does not totally go away. You can get asthma from allergies also if they get too severe.

It is not true. It is not the animal a person is allergic to,but the dander and they stuff they bring in from outside. My kids and I have asthma and allergies to dogs, I was with my ex for many many years and he had dogs, we were sick alot. We were away from him for 4 years and had no pets. Then I moved in with my new husband and he had dog and 2 cats and none of us had any problems. It all depends on what the dog is bringing in from outside, and where you are letting the dog or cat be. Animals do not cause a person to have asthma. They are not the cause. They may be the cause of the flare ups but not of the actuall illness.

I do not believe this is true, You can live w/ a ton of cats and still have allergies like my brother. But if you want a dog you can try a hypo-allergenic one.

Yes I have heard of this, and I have also heard that you will only become immune to your own pets. My sister had a little girl over on one of her birthdays, she had a cat and dog at home, but our cat bothered her. She said some animals will, breed, hair legth, nothing like that really makes a difference, just every once in a while some animal reacts to her.

I read somwhere that if you have children that are exposed to cats and/or dogs while younger, they are less likely to be allergic to them. But that is the only thing that I can think of from people becoming immune to the allergy.
